Rook & Rune is an independent publishing project devoted to history, historical research, fiction, books, and related cultural work. It brings these strands together in one permanent home for historical writing, useful research resources, imaginative stories, and longer publications.
History and research
The history section explores the past through culture and society, with particular attention to the United States from 1850 to 1900, the history of the American West, Native American history, mythology, and other subjects represented across the archive.
Research at Rook & Rune includes historical method, historiography, sources and evidence, research guides, bibliographies, and historical writing. The aim is to make both the evidence and the choices behind historical interpretation easier to follow.
Fiction and books
Rook & Rune publishes historical fiction, speculative fiction, strange and unexplained stories, and alternate history. The fiction can move from the documented past to uncertain futures and unusual places, while leaving room for the quiet, unsettling, and unexpected.
Books gathers longer work in one catalog: fiction, historical publications, research and reference works, and guides for writers. The section can grow as new books and other publications are added.
The writer behind the project
Nick Burchett writes and researches the work published here. A long-standing curiosity about how people and places came to be informs both the historical material and the fiction. For Nick’s professional historical profile and work, visit nburchett.com.
